IBM 2105 ENTERPRISE STORAGE
SERVER SUPPORT
FDR supports the IBM 2105 Enterprise Storage Server, also known as the
"Shark". All components of the FDR system (including FASTCPK, ABR, FDRREORG
and FDREPORT) will run successfully on the 2105 if your FDR is at:
V5.2 level 60 or above
V5.3 any level
There is one consideration. When you are using FDR or ABR to do a backup
to a disk dataset, you may get the following messages: in the joblog
IOS000I uuuu,cc,CMD,47,0E00,...
and in the FDR messages
FDR121 ALTERNATE ERROR REASON=1 ON TRACK CYL/HEAD=cccchhhh
However, the job will complete successfully (CC=0) if no other errors
occur.
The backup is really successful and these error messages can be ignored!
This occurs because the 2105 does not emulate alternate tracks on the
3390 and 3380 volumes it emulates. When backing up to disk, FDR needs
to read the alternate tracks on the disk, but the 2105 rejects the request.
FDR ignores the error and continues processing. Backup to disk is most
often used with ABR Archive.
If you want to suppress the messages, to avoid confusion by users and
operators, apply Innovation zap P-53.3070; this zap is included in FDR
V5.3 level 35 and above.
You can download the zap from our web site or contact
us at: support@fdrinnovation.com.
The 2105 includes new features such as Flash Copy, which Innovation intends
to exploit in future releases.
STORAGETEK 9840 SUPPORT
Additional changes were required in FATS to support the StorageTek 9840.
FATS customers with 9840s should be running V4.6 level 05; contact Innovation
if you need a new installation tape.
ABR customers taking backups to 9840s in 3490E emulation should apply
zap P-53.3074 to improve performance with backups with LASTAPE and restores.
This zap only applies to V5.3 level 30-34; it is included in V5.3 level
35.
You can download the zap from our web site or contact
us at: support@fdrinnovation.com.
ABR BACKUP PERFORMANCE ON CARTRIDGE DRIVES
In V5.3, ABR began using an IBM facility to position quickly to a particular
file on a backup cartridge, reducing restore time.
IBM has identified a problem opening multiple files on cartridge tapes
when this facility is used, but it is most noticeable on IBM Magstar 3590s
and StorageTek 9840s. The backups will run correctly, but it may take
30 seconds or more to open each subsequent file on the tape.
To solve it, you must apply
The PTF for IBM APAR OW36962
Zap P-53.2112 if you are running V5.3 levels 20-25. V5.3 level 30
and above contain the fix.

our web site or contact us at: support@fdrinnovation.com.
