WINDOWS:
FDR/UPSTREAM provides a comprehensive data protection and business resiliency,
storage management solution, including backup, restore and disaster recovery, for all of the
Server and Workstation versions of Windows. FDR/UPSTREAM provides support for every aspect
of a Windows system, including all of the features of the NTFS file system and the Windows
system state. On systems running Windows Server 2003 and above that support the Volume
ShadowCopy Service (VSS), FDR/UPSTREAM can create complete and accurate backups based on
volume snapshots. The Automatic System Recovery (ASR) features of Windows Server 2003
and above are also supported by FDR/UPSTREAM, providing disaster recovery support that is
both fast and easy to use. Windows Failover Clustering is also fully supported, along with
comprehensive support for all versions of Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange Server.
FDR/UPSTREAM can run on Intel and AMD 32-bit and 64-bit processors along with 64-bit Itanium processors.
Third-party databases such as Oracle, DB/2 and Lotus Notes installed on a Windows system are also supported. |

VMWARE:
EMC's VMware ESX server is simply a very enhanced Linux system. The FDR/UPSTREAM
client fully supports backups of VMware’s ESX server virtual machines. UPSTREAM supports
versions VMware version 2.5 through 3.x.
FDR/UPSTREAM fully supports backups of VMware’s ESX server virtual machines.
There are two methods of backups for an ESX server:
- Installing UPSTREAM on the ESX server’s console. In this case you install the
VMware/Linux version of the FDR/UPSTREAM client. This will allow you to backup the
entire ESX operating system, as well as the .vmdk and .vmx files for each virtual
machine while they are online. UPSTREAM is capable of backing up the .vmdk files
which reside on VMware’s proprietary VMFS file system. This method does not support
file level backups and restores of the virtual machines.
- Installing UPSTREAM ‘inside’ each virtual machine. This provides file level backup and
restore capabilities for your virtual machines. UPSTREAM runs in all supported VMware
virtual machine environments.
A combination of the two backup methods above may be recommended for some environments
as this will provide both complete system recovery and single file restore.
FDR/UPSTREAM runs in many supported VMware virtual machine environments and has expanded
its support for VMware’s Consolidated backup. One feature of VMware’s Consolidated backup (VCB)
is that it provides a centralized backup facility that leverages a centralized proxy server
and reduces the load on the production ESX Server hosts. This feature allows snapshots of
virtual machines to be created and mounted on the VCB Proxy server. The backup request is
then sent to the Proxy server instead of the ESX server itself.
UPSTREAM and VMware Consolidated Backup using a Proxy Server
FDR/UPSTREAM and UPSTREAM Reservoir fully and completely support VMware’s
Consolidated backup using a Proxy server. This feature allows snapshots of virtual machines to be
created and mounted on the VCB Proxy server. The backup request is then sent to the Proxy server
instead of the ESX server itself.
There are two types of VCB backups; Image level and File level. All guest VM’s
can be backed up as Image level backups.
- Image level backs up the entire guest VM as a single entity. Restores from image level backups can only put
back the entire VM guest, as it was at the time of the backup. No individual files or directories can be restored
from this type of backup. This type of backup actually creates several files, depending on the options of the
vcbMounter command. By default, the vmdk files are broken into several files approximately two GB in size. In
addition to these, the VM guest configuration file (.vmx), nvram, log files and a catalog will also be part of
the backup set.
- File level backups are only supported for guest VM’s running a Windows operating system. As the name
implies, this type of backup supports file and directory level restores.
Both types of backups are performed from the mounted snap shots that are created on the proxy server.
In many cases, it is a best practice to also install UPSTREAM ‘inside’ the guest VM and do your back
ups from there. In particular if you need file level granularity on non-Windows guests, or any of
UPSTREAM’s online database support. |
