Protect your Linux on System z applications and systems with FDR/UPSTREAM
New Features
FDR/UPSTREAM is the most simple, easy-to-use product to protect data.
UPSTREAM lowers your TCO by using your existing z/OS systems
and resources making it a perfect Linux on System z storage management tool.
UPSTREAM can protect your applications such as Websphere, Apache, SendMail,
& Samba and also provides Disaster Recovery with the Rescuer!
FDR/UPSTREAM can protect Linux on System z and System z hardware supporting Linux clients on either a LPAR or z/VM virtual machine.
FDR/UPSTREAM for Linux on System z provides a complete Disaster Recovery solution for Linux on System z with "Rescuer".
Features include:
- Automatically initiate the backup by submitting a "batch job" with your z/OS job scheduler
- Use existing z/OS tape drives and tape management system to control retention and manage backup tapes
- Interfaces include TSO ISPF, command line, "Director" JAVA and browser interface
- Full-featured safe and secure daemon
- FDR/UPSTREAM's provides extensive support for Linux including advanced UNIX
file system specific features include hard links, symbolic links, owners,
extended attributes, single file system support, support for Reiser file
system as well as ext2, ext3, XFS, JFS, GFS, MAPFS, GPFS, and remote NFS or
CIFS attachments.
- Support for HiperSockets and high-speed network adapters
UPSTREAM Data Reduction tools to help meet your backup window
- Full-Merge Backup with Incremental Backup Processing and Logical File Granularity
- Data Compression
- Duplicate File Recognition
- Block Level Segmented Backup Support
- Online Hot Database Agents

UPSTREAM provides a variety of user interfaces including TSO ISPF, character mode, command line, the "End User
Restore" GUI and the "Director". The Director is a platform independent JAVA Application that provides a user-friendly
graphical management and administrative interface that can be run from a workstation anywhere in your network,
virtually anywhere in the enterprise. The Director also can run from a web browser making it truly and easily enabled
for cross platform operations. The Director executes automatically and is operational in minutes.
Using the UPSTREAM Director you can initiate backups
and restores, check the status of running operations,
retrieve log files, perform profile configuration, run preand
post-processing jobs and more. The comprehensive
reporting features help keep your storage administrator
staff efficient, aware and advised.

The Director has the ability to communicate, control,
and monitor the facilities of the Linux on System z applications
or databases it is backing up and also the UPSTREAM
mainframe backup server providing centralized single
view and control.
The Director interface provides administrators with the
tools to easily manage multiple Linux on System z servers or
instances. The Director provides robust industrial
strength functionality allowing multiple simultaneous
operations. For example, while monitoring the progress
of several Linux on System z backups, you can change views to kick
off a Linux on System z restore, and then switch to see the status of
a NetWare backup and then switch view again to see the
job log for Windows 2003 server.
“...The Director Rules.”
The UPSTREAM agents provide online high performance backup capability, giving you maximum protection for your data without having to bring the database down in order to do your backups. The UPSTREAM
agents provide non-disruptive "HOT BACKUP" to manage large amounts of data within your scheduled
backup window. UPSTREAM can also be used to backup and restore a database application.
FDR/UPSTREAM for Linux on System z is fully integrated into Oracle's
Recovery Manager (RMAN), a full-featured backup facility that can be
used to perform online and offline, full, incremental and tablespace backups.
UPSTREAM achieves high-performance and enhanced scalability through:
- Multi-channel parallel processing achieves maximum throughput
- Network Free HiperSockets support
- RMAN speed features such as online incremental support
- RMAN block level incrementals
FDR/UPSTREAM fully integrates with IBM's DB2 Universal Server, another full-featured facility that includes online and offline backup of complete databases or individual tablespaces. UPSTREAM can operate as a user
exit that allows on demand or system generated transaction log backups, which act as incrementals and
result in reduced data transmission.
- Policy-based
- Online and offline support that provide full and incremental backup
- Tablespace level backups and restores
- Interacts with DB2 scripts for seamless operation and reduced training costs
- Includes user exit for system generated incremental if running archive log mode
|
- The user exit supports roll-forwards of transaction logs
- Supports full and incremental backups as a "vendor shared library"
- Support for DB2 "load utility" to create or add data to a database
- Automatic notification of user exit failure
- Archive and auto recall of transaction logs

FDR/UPSTREAM provides a robust, integrated solution for the protection of critical Notes and Domino information, enabling online backups of Lotus Domino for Linux on zSeries without disrupting user
productivity. This means that UPSTREAM can perform online full backups of databases (even if in use)
as well as incremental backups by backing up Notes transaction logs; which is essential if you are using
transaction logging.
FDR/UPSTREAM provides a comprehensive solution for file systems as well as databases. UPSTREAM
file system support can be used to recover the Notes application. UPSTREAM can be used to recover
a Notes database in a disaster recovery as well as a point-in-time recovery. UPSTREAM can also
allow the database to be restored to an alternate location. UPSTREAM can perform incremental backups
of databases where Notes reports that a new backup is needed or if a DBIID change is detected and the
database is backed up to assure recovery from transaction logs.
The FDR/UPSTREAM support is extensive as it includes databases, transaction logs, and templates,
and also automatically backups important non-database data, such as Notes ID files, and notes ini files.
The UPSTREAM agent does this via the efficient easy-to-use PlugIn method.
Just a few simple steps are required before you can start running
your FDR/UPSTREAM for Linux on System z backups.
- Install and configure the separate FDR/UPSTREAM components on Linux on System z and on your z/OS host server.
- Assign the DNS name or TCP/IP address and port number to communicate between the two FDR/UPSTREAM software components.
- Configure FDR/UPSTREAM for Linux and OS/390.
- Run a communication test to validate the TCP/IP connection.
- Run your first backup!

The FDR/UPSTREAM Rescuer, Bare Metal System Recovery facility.
FDR/UPSTREAM includes all file types in the system in its file-level backups. It also incorporates in the backup
(with no special set up, consideration or knowledge of file systems) system mount points and some general information about each of these file
systems. It's easy and simple-to-use since all of this information
is incorporated transparently in the backup and does not affect backup performance.
- Allows full system recovery
(rather than just application recovery)
- Recovers applications, system settings,
networking definitions and more
- Recommended in situations where the hardware doesn't change
